KANNUR: The former Kasaragod MP and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M. Ramanna Rai died in a hospital in Kasaragod on Tuesday. He was 79.
Rai, who represented the Kasaragod Parliament constituency in 1980, 1989 and 1991, died in a private hospital at 4.30 p.m.
The body would be kept for public to pay homage at the CPI(M) district office at Kasaragod and at his residence at Mulleriya, near Kasaragod, before it would be handed over to the Pariyaram Medical College as per his wishes.
Born in 1930, he had been in the forefront of the Communist movement in the region. Secretary of the Kasaragod local committee of the undivided Communist Party of India from 1960 to 1964, he had served as member of the Kannur district committee of the CPI(M) from 1965 to 1986.
He is survived by his wife, Rajivi, and daughter Pushpalatha.
