Thrissur: The police on Wednesday arrested Sreekantan, alias Sreekuttan, 18, a BJP worker, on the charge of murdering a fellow activist, Vijith, at Chanthapura in Kodungalloor on November 22.

The police found Vijith, 22, son of Mohanan of Aruketti on Thalikkulam Thriveni Beach, with stab injuries at Chanthapura on Sunday around 12.15 a.m. He died at the Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital around 2 a.m.

A team led by Irinjalakuda Deputy Superintendent of Police V.V. Sasikumar arrested Sreekantan, son of Balakrishnan of Vadakke House at Kunjanini in Edavilangu. The arrested is a student of Kerala Varma High School in Eriyad.

The police described the case as a “love triangle murder.” According to the police version, Sreekantan was enraged over Vijith’s alleged relation with a divorced woman. “Sreekantan’s love for the woman was unrequited. He and his friend Vinod damaged flex boards in Chanthapura on Saturday night. Vijith arrived later. There was a tussle between Sreekantan and Vijith over the affair. Vinod ran away. Sreekantan stabbed Vijith with a chisel 13 times. He later gave false information to the police that a gang that arrived in a car and four motorcycles had stabbed Vijith,” the police said.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) pooh-poohed BJP’s earlier allegation that CPI(M) workers were behind the murder. “The truth is finally out. The BJP worker was murdered by another,” said CPI(M) district secretary Baby John .

The BJP, however, described Sreekantan’s arrest as “mysterious.” “The BJP feels that the police are protecting the interests of the CPI(M),” alleged BJP district secretary B. Gopalakrishnan .
