THRISSUR: The in-patient wing of the Pain and Palliative Care Society, Thrissur, will open on Monday, marking an important milestone in the decade-old history of the organised palliative care in the district.

The in-patient wing, to be operated from the society’s headquarters housed on the old district hospital premises, will be inaugurated by C.K. Chandrappan, MP. “The wing will have 10 beds and all the services will be free for the incurably ill and chronically bed-ridden patients,” Dr. C. Satheesh Kumar, secretary of the society, said.

Dr. E. Divakaran, director, Institute of Palliative Care, the training and research wing of the society, said the in-patient care unit aimed to cater to patients with severe symptoms such as smelly wounds and painful infections. It would also provide help to terminally ill patients.

Another objective is to provide respite care so that the family and relatives of the patients could get an occasional respite from the stressful patient care at home. Pain and palliative care offers medical and nursing care as well as other support to people with incurable or chronic illnesses, such as certain types of advanced cancer, paralysis, renal diseases and even old-age disabilities.

Mr. E. Sasikumaran Raja, President of Indian Association of Palliative Care, Kerala Chapter, said the Pain and Palliative Care Society in Thrissur district, set up in 1997, currently had 12 units. The current premises were provided by the district panchayat, which had taken a very active interest in developing the movement with funds.
