Kozhikode: Chengara-model agitations to ensure distribution of land among the landless will be staged across the State, P. Ramabhadran, president of Kerala Dalit Federation and patron of the Chengara Agitation Solidarity Committee, said here on Saturday.

He was inaugurating a convention for second land reforms organised in connection with federation’s northern regional convention. Demanding an overhaul of the Kerala Land Reforms Act, Mr. Ramabhadran said the first phase of the reforms did not have the desired effect since many landlords bent the rules to keep in their possession the land that they should have handed over to the State government.

Forged documents

Documents were forged to show land as plantations to escape the law, he alleged. In this situation, a second round of land reforms had become necessary. He said those who had escaped the law by falsifying documents should be detected and the land in their possession distributed among the landless.

The government should take over land on which leases had expired and distribute it, Mr. Ramabhadran demanded.

T.P. Bhaskaran, general secretary of the federation, presided. Leaders of the federation’s feeder organisations spoke.
