THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cuban Ambassador to India Miguel Angel Ramirez Ramos was here on Thursday with his country’s campaign to mobilise world opinion against the “unjust” detention of five Cubans by the U.S. on “trumped up” charges since 1998.
With him was a delegation consisting of the lawyer representing the detainees and wife of one of the detainees, Fernando Gonzalez Llort.
Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan hosted a dinner for the delegation at the Mascot Hotel. The State units of the CPI(M) and the CPI organised a public reception for the delegation at the Gandhi Park Maidan. Senior leaders of the two parties attended.
Talking to the media earlier in the day, Mr. Ramirez Ramos said the five Cubans were arrested in Florida in September 1998 on “false charges” of espionage. They had been denied a fair trial and had been kept in isolation cells for long periods, in violation of human rights.
Fernando Gonzalez Llort’s wife Rosa Aurora Freijanes narrated the trauma the families of the five prisoners had been undergoing. The U.S. authorities had even denied permission for the wives to meet their husbands.
