KOCHI: The District Labour Office and the District Medical Officer have called for a meeting with the builders and contractors having sites in Edachira, where a large number of workers are employed, to take up preventive steps against spreading of any disease.
The meeting, to be held on September 17, will also take up the issues of general health and hygiene of the workers at various sites. There are over 500 migrant workers employed at various sites in Edachira alone.
The Health authorities in association with the District Labour Office will be conducting a medical camp in Edachira on Saturday for these workers. The camp is being conducted following media reports that the workers in Edachira sites are suffering from chicken pox and malaria, said the District Labour Officer (Enforcement).
However, an inspection has not found cases particular to the group, he said. Chicken pox is being reported in the general population too, though a couple of cases of malaria were reported a month earlier, he said.
The medical team sent by the DMO will hold a screening for malaria and leprosy at the camp and give treatment to any fever cases. The health professionals would also provide general health awareness tips to the workers.
