KOZHIKODE: Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the Peruvannamuzhi Eco-tourism project at Peruvannamuzhi, about 60 km from Kozhikode, on August 10.

Forest Minister Benoy Viswom will preside over the inaugural function.

The Rs.13.70-lakh project is being implemented by the Pannikkottur Vana Samrakshana Samithi, an organisation involving local people.

The project is funded by the Tourism Department.

Flora and fauna

Facilities for tourists have been put in place in the forest area around the Peruvannamuzhi dam without affecting the ecological balance of the area.

The facilities include wild animal rehabilitation centre, bird sanctuary, crocodile farm, trekking and boating.

The area is considered to be a continuation of the ecological hot spots in the Western Ghats.

More than 680 species of plants have been identified in the area. Of them, 226 species are seen only here.

A total of 69 rare species of plants here are facing extinction.

About 40 species of mammals have been spotted in this area and of these, three are found only here.

More than 110 species of birds and 34 species of reptiles, including the king cobra, have been identified here.

Second phase

The samithi has submitted a proposal for the second phase of the project to the Tourism Department.

It envisages construction of tree huts and dormitories inside the forest at an estimated cost of Rs.30 lakh.
