A festival exclusively of films based on Marquez’s works will be held on July 27
It is sometimes said that Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the most popular Malayalam novelist. The Nobel-prize winning author from Columbia has had tremendous following in Kerala with the success of Malayalam translations of his novels like ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ and ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’.
He continues to fascinate the Malayali reader and now a film club of a college in Kozhikode is paying a unique tribute to this great master – by holding a festival exclusively of films based on Marquez’s works.
The festival, being organised by Devagiri Film Club, will be held at St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri, next Sunday (July 27). The films being shown are ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’, ‘No One Writes to the Colonel’, ‘The Summer of Miss Forbes’ and ‘I’m the One You’re Looking For’.
Acclaimed British director Mike Newell adapted ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ last year. Newell is the director of films such as ‘Dance with a Stranger’, ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’, ‘Donnie Brasco’, ‘Mona Lisa Smile’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’.
‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ is a love triangle spanning over half-a-century. Javia Bardem, Benjamin Bratt and Fernanda Montenegro star in this film version of one of Marquez’s most successful works.
Arturo Ripstein is the director of ‘No One Writes to the Colonel (1999), which is about a colonel in the evening of his life. Fernando Lujan plays the title role.
Hanna Schygulla stars as an unpopular governess of two boys in ‘The Summer of Miss Forbes’ (1988). The film is directed by Jaime Humberto Hermosillo.
‘I’m the One You’re Looking for’ (1988) is the story of Natalia (Patricia Adriani), a model in search of the man who raped her. Jaime Chavarri is the director. For more details about the festival, contact: 9447333380.
