KOCHI: For an ageing population, health is a major concern. Not just in terms of medical needs, but also in terms of social needs. As the youth today do not have quality time to spend with the aged, they are left to find their own means of engagement and entertainment.

The social and medical needs of the elderly are different as is their outlook towards life. But, there is precisely nothing that has been carved out for them either by the Government or by society.

There are a few organisations which have taken up their cause as the problems of the elderly have become more evident in society now.

Caring for the elderly takes on a different tone. As such even medical aid has to be different from what is provided to a child or a youth or even a middle-aged person.

Elders’ village

An Elders’ Village called Sneha Theeram is coming up in Cherai to promote healthy living among the aged. The village coming up in 8.5 acres of land will have all the facilities needed for the elderly, said Dr. N. Madhu, director of Chaitanya Nursing Home, which is the major promoter of the village.

Already more than 10 people are staying there though construction work is still on. There are private accommodations too. About 80 people would be able to stay in these facilities when they are complete by the year-end, said Dr. Madhu.

A number of members of the Senior Citizens’ Club promoted by Chaitanya are also part of the project.

The Club, active since the last eight years, has a number of activities like medical camps, talks and other activities. The houses would be provided as temporary or permanent accommodation.

While the temporary accommodation would cost Rs. 7,500 per month as rent for all the facilities, permanent accommodation would require a deposit that would take care of their lifelong needs.

Holistic care

Chaitanya Spa, a holistic treatment centre, has already come up in the village that would provide services for the elderly people in the village.
