KOCHI: In the wake of an accident at a private construction site that claimed the lives of two workers near Kakkanad early this week, the district labour department has started a crackdown on construction sites in the region violating provisions on workers’ welfare.

The special squad of the department detected about 100 migrant workers being accommodated in unsafe living conditions at a construction site at Edachira near Kakkanad during an inspection carried out on Thursday as directed by District Collector M. Beena. Following this, the squad directed the construction company to make amends regarding the shelter for these workers.

Of these, only 25 workers were registered under the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act.

The company was directed to register the remaining workers and to issue identity cards to them. The department officials have warned of stringent punitive measures if the company fails to comply with the directions.

The squad is all set to conduct more inspections in worksites centred around Kakkanad in the coming days.
