KOCHI: Planting of saplings at various places marked the World Environment Day programmes in Ernakulam on Thursday.

Tree planting was organised jointly by various courts in the district and the District Legal Service Authority. D. Pappachan, District judge and chairman of the Legal Services Authority, led the environment day programmes held at the District Court premises.

Lawyers of the Kerala High Court also joined hands to spread the message of “Carbon Dioxide - Kick the Habit: Towards a low carbon economy”.

The programme was jointly organised by the Kerala State Legal Service Authority, the Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association and the Lawyers Environmental Awareness Forum.

Venganoor K. Chandrasekharan Nair, Additional Advocate General, distributed saplings to the lawyers and High Court employees. “Through where the rivers flow”, a film on environment directed by Sajith Anchal, was screened on the occasion.

Saplings were planted at Cochin Special Economic Zone in connection with the World Environment Day. Thejaswani Vichar Manch, a women’s organisation for cultural empowerment, provided the saplings under the ‘Nakshatravanam’ project that consists of 27 varieties of trees ideal for checking industrial pollution.

Casino Hotel, a unit of cgh earth, organised a cycle rally covering the city, to spread the message, ‘carbon dioxide –kick the habit; towards a low carbon economy’ and create awareness about the need for having a pollution free environment.
