High command will endorse decision, says Mohsina
Meets Karunakaran over lunch at his daughter’s house in Kochi
Chandy, Chennithala and Karunakaran to meet
KOCHI: The Congress leadership has left it to the State party leaders to sort out the issue of accommodating K. Karunakaran’s loyalists in the party.
On Thursday, Congress general secretary in charge of Kerala, Mohsina Kidwai, who had facilitated Mr. Karunakaran and his group’s return to the party, said that Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala and Mr. Karunakaran would sit together and take a decision.
Ms. Kidwai met Mr. Karunakaran over lunch at his daughter’s house in the city. Mr. Chennithala was with Ms. Kidwai when she called on Mr. Karunakaran. Emerging from the meeting, she told newspersons that the high command would endorse the decision of the State leaders on the issue of assigning party responsibilities to those who had returned to the party along with Mr. Karunakaran.
Ever since Mr. Karunakaran and his followers returned to the Congress in January-February, assigning them party responsibilities has been a ticklish problem.
Mr. Karunakaran has insisted that four district Congress committee presidencies (Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Malappuram) should go to his group, apart from six posts of KPCC general secretary, one KPCC vice-president and five secretaries. Mr. Karunakaran is particularly keen on the DCC presidencies of Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur.
Another demand of the Karunakaran faction had been a place for its leader on the Congress Working Committee (CWC).
Following Ms. Kidwai’s visit to Kochi last time and her talks with Mr. Karunakaran, the latter was made a permanent invitee to the CWC. However, the State leaders who had been lukewarm to the idea of taking Mr. Karunakaran back in to the party are said to be wary of Mr. Karunakaran’s demands.
