KOLLAM: The Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has named a minor planet after Kollam-based environmentalist Sainudeen Pattazhy. Minor planet 5178 Pattazhy was discovered by the California-based astronomer R. Rajamohan in 1989. The planet was named after Dr. Pattazhy on the basis of his environmental research works on red rain, potential health hazard of mobile phone towers, biological control of mosquitoes and the eco-biology of sacred groves. Dr. Pattazhy is a senior lecturer in zoology at Kollam S.N. College.
