PALAKKAD: V. Chandran, a farmer of Thiruvalathur near here, sank a borewell on the premises of his new house ‘Nidhi’ at Kallingal and struck it rich.
He was gifted with enough and more water. So, Chandran decided to be the Good Samaritan and share his bounty with the less fortunate in this water-scarce area of Palakkad.
He installed a pump in the 6.5-inch diameter borewell, extracting 650 to 700 litres of water in a minute.
Though water is big business now – sold for Rs.12-13 per litre -- he charges only Rs.1.5 per litre, that too to meet the electricity charge and the cost of maintenance of the well.
Offer to Fire Service
Chandran plans to continue with the good work if there is no hike in electricity charge, since he considers this new-found asset a ‘gift of God.’ He has already written to the authorities expressing willingness to provide drinking water free of cost round the clock from the borewell. An offer was made to the Fire Force also, since they find it difficult to get enough water for their operations.
