Dubai: Two Indian schoolgirls who were run over by a speeding car in the United Arab Emirates succumbed to their injuries after battling for life for more than a week.

Sasinas Jayadas (5) died in a hospital on Sunday. Joji Mathew Kuruvilla succumbed to her injuries on Friday. Both girls, students of Indian School in Ras Al Khaimah, were critically injured when run over by a speeding car after getting off a school bus on February 14. The bus stopped on the opposite side of Sasinas’s residence. Joji volunteered to help her cross the street, while Sasinas’ mother was waiting on the other side with her baby, according to witnesses. “Sasinas went a little bit ahead of Joji to cross the street, in front of the bus. She did not see the car driven by an Emirati identified as A.A., but Joji did and rushed to stop her,” the witnesses said. However, the car struck both girls who sustained critical injuries, they said. The bus driver and caretakers were suspended by the school management, which is investigating the accident, A.M.M. Noorudheen, general secretary of the RAK Indian Association and Indian School, said. — PTI
