NEDUMBASSERY: Maintenance work on the Instrumental Landing System (ILS) leading to a partial close-down of the runway combined with low visibility on Saturday morning resulted in temporary disruption of flight services at the Cochin International Airport. at Nedumbassery.

The Air India Express (IX 434) from Dubai, Sri Lanka Airlines (165) from Colombo, AirIndia (AI 850) from Kuwait and Air India Express (IX452) from Abu Dhabi were diverted to Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram to be allowed later to land at Nedumbassery after a delay of three to five hours.

Operations of domestic flight carriers, including Jet Airways and the Kingfisher airlines, were also hit due to the maintenance work.

The partial closing down of the runway demanded increased visibility standard. However, the conditions returned to normality after 11.30 a.m.

The Airport authorities explained that the repairs on the runway along with the low visibility in the morning caused the delay in flights. They also claimed that all the airline services were informed about the closure well in advance.
