KOZHIKODE: Students of the Marqaz School at Karanthur here will involve themselves in welfare activities, in addition to their regular academic curriculum, during 2008.
The social service initiative, to be led by students of the Arabic Department of the school, would provide solace to those addicted to alcohol and drugs. The students plan to organise counselling sessions and awareness camps.
Members of Ihya Ussunna, the social service association of the Arabic Department, are already engaged in welfare activities among inmates of Government Leprosy Hospital, Chevayur.
Shamim Pullavoor, general secretary of Ihya Ussunna, said the welfare activities would be extended to the whole district jointly with the Hillside Development and Service Society.
Special squads have been set up for carrying on the student welfare initiatives.
Initially, the campaign would cover pockets of coastal-hill areas of the district, schools for hearing and visually impaired, Bangladesh Colony, and Kozhikode Medical College.
C. Mohammed Faizi, chairman of the welfare advisory committee, said efforts would be made to provide educational assistance to students from economically backward families, and bring them to the mainstream.
A meeting held here in this connection was inaugurated by Mohammedali Saqafi Valliyod and it was presided over by Faizi. Jabeer Sakhafi Parappalli, among others, was present at the meeting.
