Arrest made on charge of receiving stolen gold
Buses diverted from the route where the scuffle occurred
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A section of traders in Chalai blocked the road and attempted to force the closure of shops in protest against the arrest of a jewellery shop owner by a Tamil Nadu police team on Thursday.
A police team from Marthandam police station in neighbouring Kanyakumari district arrested Isahaq, owner of a jewellery, on the charge of receiving stolen gold from a group of suspected thieves believed to be responsible for a series of housebreaks in Tamil Nadu.
The Marthandam police hustled Isahaq into their vehicle at 8 a.m.
He tried to resist their efforts and soon a scuffle ensued. The police team sped away from the spot in their vehicle with Isahaq.
A police team led by Assistant Commissioner, Fort, B. Krishnakumar, reached the spot and negotiated with the protesting traders. The police also diverted transport buses from the route for nearly an hour.
‘Informed of arrest’
Mr. Krishnakumar said the Tamil Nadu police had informed Fort Circle Inspector B. Harikumar over telephone about their intent to arrest Isahaq.
