Symposium on laser science

KOCHI: The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research will organise the second Asian symposium on 'Intense Laser Science,' in Kochi from January 22 to 27. The inaugural function will be held at Taj Residency on Sunday at 4 p.m. Subsequent sessions will be held at Taj Malabar. Around 50 scientists from Asia are expected to participate in the session. - Staff Reporter

College students to be felicitated

KOCHI: Students of Mar Athanasius College who won ranks in various examinations conducted by Mahatma Gandhi University will be felicitated at a meeting to be held on Monday. Fire at MES quarters

KOCHI: An electric short circuit led to a fire in the electric cable duct at the Military Engineering Services (MES) staff quarters, Thykoodam, in the Vytilla-Pettah route, on Saturday night. Around 30 naval families were staying in the quarters. The incident took place at 8.30 p.m. Assistant Divisional Fire Officer R. Prasad said that power cables in the duct running from the third floor to the sixth floor of the apartment complex caught fire and suffered extensive damage. Two fire tenders from the Gandhinagar fire station and one from the Naval Base put out the fire in 45 minutes. - Staff Reporter

Prayer session

KOCHI: The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church has announced that a prayer session will be held at the Mar Athanasius Study Centre, Aluva, on Sunday. The session will be inaugurated by Baseliose Thomas I. This is in connection with the anniversary feast of Paulose Mor Athanasius. - Staff Reporter

Vehicle rally planned

KOCHI: The Ernakulam district committee of the Madya Nirodharana Samithi will take out a vehicle rally on January 26 from the northern end of the district to the southern end, against the liquor policy of the State Government. It will reach Gandhi Bhavan at 4 p.m. - Staff Reporter
