RTO crackdown on tipper lorries

Thiruvananthapuram: The Motor Vehicles Department has set up squads under the Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) in all districts to take stern action against tipper lorries indulging in overloading and violating various provisions of traffic and Motor Vehicle rules. During the checking carried out in the city on Tuesday, cases were charged against 35 tipper lorries and nine tipper lorries were taken into custody. The department said a sum of Rs.64, 300 was recovered as penalty from the lorries. - Staff Reporter

Fishermen's plea

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Swatantra Matsya Thozilali Federation (KSMTF) has demanded the payment of assistance to all fishermen whose nets were destroyed by puffer fish instead of confining it to the members of the Matsyafed. A meeting of the federation chaired by State president T. Peter here on Tuesday said hundreds of fishermen who were not members of the Matsyafed were also affected. They should not be discriminated against. Referring to Fisheries Minister Dominic Presentation's reported statement that traditional fishermen were not equipped to undertake deep sea fishing, the meeting said if this was the case, it was the Government's duty to equip them. - Special Correspondent

Students' demand

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ayurveda postgraduate students and house surgeons staged a dharna in front of the Secretariat demanding that their monthly stipend be hiked immediately. The dharna was inaugurated by Pirappancode Murali, MLA, who asked the Government to take heed of the genuine demands of students. - Staff Reporter

Undertrials missing

Thiruvananthapuram: Four boys who were undertrials and were in the observation home attached to the Juvenile Home at Poojappura were reported missing by the Home authorities on Tuesday evening. The Poojappura police said that two of the boys had since then been traced and that they were looking for the other two. - Staff Reporter
