ALAPPUZHA: The government is taking steps to strengthen the Excise Department, as part of which officers would soon be given weapons and adequate transport facilities, Excise Minister P.K. Gurudasan has said.

Speaking after inaugurating a new office complex for the Excise Department’s Alappuzha wing here on Wednesday, Mr. Gurudasan said the government had already held consultations with the Defence Ministry regarding supply of modern weapons for officials.

Over 3,000 employees were imparted training, including physical training, legal awareness, tips for improving behavioural aspects at the Police Academy at Thrissur so far.

Calling upon the Excise department to curb the flow of illicit liquor, particularly in the southern districts , Mr. Gurudasan also said campaigns to spread awareness on the ill-effects of liquor addiction would be launched soon.
