THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The British Council has invited applications for scholarships to carry out doctoral research leading to a Ph.D., D.Phil. degree in institutions in the United Kingdom (U.K.).

Ten fully funded scholarships will be available under the U.K.-India Education and Research Initiative for those with excellent academic backgrounds.

Though applications can be submitted by candidates from all disciplines, a majority of the awards are likely to be in areas related to science and technology, a press note issued here said.

The applicant should be an Indian national with a valid passport and below 35 years of age as on May 15, 2007.

The applicant should hold a Master's degree from a reputed university/institution with a first class or upper second class and keen to pursue a full-time doctoral research degree from a U.K. university beginning September/October 2007.

The applicant should be fluent in spoken and written English.

The scholarships cover academic fees, international airfare, monthly stipend to cover living expenses and gratis visa.

Candidates will have to identify a suitable doctoral programme and a supervisor in a U.K. institution and apply for placement and secure admission.

The application for scholarship should be accompanied by either a confirmed or conditional offer letter from the university.

Preference will be given to those with confirmed offers. Applications without offer letters will not be considered.

Applications must be sent to the Scholarships Section, British Council, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata or Mumbai before May 15, 2007, the press note added.
