KOLLAM: Members of the Velichikala Action Council staged a march to office of the Kollam Superintendent of Police on Wednesday demanding action against the Chathannur police station Sub-Inspector, Sherief. The council members alleged that the SI had illegally arrested and detained council convener A. Baiju.

The Velichikala Action Council was constituted to garner mass support against the clay quarrying activities of a private company at Velichikala. For the past two and a half years the action council had been on the forefront against quarrying here. Quarrying was banned for a short time as a result of the agitation. But, the company managed to get permit again.

Leader of the action council, Odanavattom Vijayaprakash, said that quarrying had brought about heavy environmental damage at Velichikala. The air gets polluted with clay dust. Two streams passing through area too have become polluted. This has created health problems.

Third degree measures

Council members were being falsely implicated in police cases, Mr. Vijayaprakash added. Mr. Baiju was one such victim. He was subjected to third degree measures while in police custody, it was alleged. The march began from the Rest House junction.
