Freedom fighter’s statue constructed at a cost of Rs.20 lakh
Vice-President Hamid Ansari will unveil a statue of freedom fighter Annie Mascarene at the Annie Mascarene Square at Vazhuthacaud here and address a gathering at the Government Women’s College auditorium on September 11.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Annie Mascarene Smaraka Samithi general convener and Vicar-General of the Thiruvananthapuram Archdiocese Fr. Eugene H. Pereira said the Vice-President would first address the gathering at the college auditorium during a public meeting that would begin at 8 a.m. and later unveil the statue.
The public meeting would be presided over by Governor Nikhil Kumar. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy would deliver the inaugural address, he said.
Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos; Archbishop M. Susaipakiam; Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien; Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food K.V. Thomas; Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor; and Ministers K.M. Mani, P.K. Kunhalikutty, K.C. Joseph, V.S. Sivakumar, and Shibu Baby John would deliver messages on the occasion.
Former Minister, MP
Ms. Mascarene, apart from being a freedom fighter, was Minister of Public Health in the Travancore-Cochin State, member of the Constituent Assembly of India, Member of Parliament representing Thiruvananthapuram, and Secretary of the Travancore State Congress.
Sculptor from Chennai
The bronze statue, sculpted by Kishore Nagappa of Chennai, was approved by the State government and the city Corporation, and was constructed at a cost of Rs.20 lakh, half of which was provided by the State government.
