: Another batch of Sri Lankans was detained in the city, while waiting to be illegally taken to Australia. The Q Branch of Tamil Nadu got in touch with the City Police on getting information that 21 persons from three families settled in two refugee camps — at Chennai and Erode — were staying in the city. During investigation, they were traced to a lodge in the city.
The group comprised seven men, six women and eight children, some as young as four years. The group is believed to have reached the city on May 20, after paying the agent Rs.13 lakh. They were told that they would be taken out on boat from Njarakkal and smuggled to Australia along sea route. On the basis of the information provided by the members of the group, the police are trying to trace the agent.
