PATHANAMTHITTA: The northern ‘malika' attached to the ‘chuttambalom' of the 10-century old Devi Temple at Edanattidom, near Aranmula, was gutted early on Thursday.

“A wooden structure that housed the storeroom and strong room of the temple has been completely burnt,” said K.S. Sudarshanan Pillai, temple devaswom committee president.

Mr. Pillai told The Hindu that the silver idol, bronze lamps and vessels melted in the heat. The fire was sighted around 1.30 a.m. by a priest staying near the temple. It took an hour-and-a-half for the Fire and Rescue Services teams from Thiruvalla and Chengannur to put out the fire.

The temple authorities said the incident did not affect the rituals at the temple.
