THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Malayalam cinema and Kerala stand honoured by the Padma Vibhushan, says filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who was conferred the coveted honour.

"The honour was totally unexpected as I was neither an applicant nor an aspirant. But when an honour that was conferred on filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen comes to me, I am excited," says Adoor.

Asked whether such accolades fuel one's creative urge, Adoor says these are the recognition for the distinctive service one renders in his realm. "As a filmmaker, I feel this award is nothing but a recognition for Malayalam cinema in general, not for off-beat cinema alone," he says.

Adoor says novelty in content and treatment is the key to his success. Last year, he was engrossed in work on the documentaries on Mohiniyattom and Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair and did not have time to think of other projects.

"Usually I do only one film a year. I do not draw any distinction between a documentary and a feature film and approach both with due seriousness."
