S. Ambili of Kilimanoor was chosen as one of the best three performers in a six-day training programme in coconut-tree climbing conducted by the ‘Friends of Coconut,’ a Thrissur-based organisation, at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mannuthy, Thrissur.

Twenty women, who took part in the programme, were given training in coconut palm management practices, coconut pests and diseases, personality development, healthy lifestyle, coconut-tree climbing skills, and benefits from banking services.

The Coconut Development Board sponsored the programme. Each participant was insured for Rs.1 lakh, given a daily stipend of Rs.150, and a climbing tool free of cost.

Bank loans

If they use the skill for self-employment, subsidised bank loans to buy a two-wheeler will also be arranged.

Niji Thomas from Cherpu and Essy Biju from Tirur were the other two chosen for best performance. Ms. Thomas, a graduate in Chemistry, described the experience as thrilling.

“I will never miss such skill-oriented training programmes in future,” she said.
