Siju M.R. and Antony Muniyara of Mathrubhumi and Biji Jalal of Indiavision have won this year’s B.R. Ambedkar media awards instituted by the Department of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes.

Mr. Siju and Mr. Muniyara shared the award in the print section for a serialised article titled ‘Edamalakkudikku Kalidarunnu’ published in Mathrubhumi in October 2011. This article highlighted the survival struggles of the tribal people in Edamalakkudi hamlet in Idukki district, Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes A.P. Anil Kumar said here on Thursday.

Mr. Jalal was selected for the award in the visual media section for a programme he presented in the channel on two ‘achievers’ from the Paniya community. The jury also made ‘special mention’ about an article by B.V. Pavanan of Kerala Kaumudi and a television feature by Anil Karamal of the Jeevan TV. They will get a prize of Rs.10.000 each, the Minister said.

The jury, chaired by Kerala Press Academy Chairman N.P. Rajendran, included Information and Public Relations Director A. Firoz; Doordarshan news editor K.A. Beena; Chief of Bureau of The Hindu C. Gouridasan Nair; and executive editor of Jai Hind TV J.S. Indukumar.
