KOZHIKODE: The decision of the district administration to provide the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) parking for its buses on the Vellayil Thodiyil beach has sparked off protests in the coastal area of the city.

The Kozhikode district Theeradesha Araya Samajam Kshetra Committee and the Vellayil Mahal Committee have come out with a joint statement against the decision. Several Hindu organisations have also opposed it.

At present, the buses are parked at the Corporation Stadium owing to the construction of new buildings at the existing bus station on Mavoor Road. The proposal is to allot parking space on the land owned by the Department of Ports at the Vellayil Thodiyil beach, near the Lions Park. The office of the Station Master will be shifted to the Town Hall premises. Ordinary KSRTC buses will begin service from Mananchira.

The administration decided to shift the parking from the Corporation Stadium to the Vellayil beach in view of the renovation of the stadium for the National Games.

The Muslim and Hindu organisation office-bearers said that the beach was being used for numerous religious activities. Besides, traditional fishermen carry out repairs on boats and fishing equipment on the beach. The area, if allotted for parking, would become a safe haven for anti-social elements.

They warned that the people would be compelled to take the issue to the streets.
