Identity proof must for voters

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto has said that all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the polls in 59 constituencies falling in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki, have been completed.

Electoral identity cards are compulsory for the voters to enter the polling booths. However, if a voter had lost the card, he or she will be permitted to vote on the strength of other credible documents to establish the identity. These include driving licence, Income Tax pan card, photo-affixed identity cards issued by the Government or public sector organisations and photo-affixed bank deposit card or post office saving account card.

The Chief Electoral Officer said that more than 99 per cent of the voters had been issued electoral identity cards. Photographs of individual voters were included in the voters' list with the polling officials too. However, in very few cases, mismatch of photographs was a possibility in the voters' list. In such cases, the polling officials had been directed to permit the voters concerned to cast their votes on the strength of the electoral identity cards or other documents establishing the identity.

Ms. Netto said every precaution had been taken to ensure that the polling was conducted peacefully. There would be sufficient police presence at all the polling stations to prevent untoward developments.

The polling would be on electronic voting machines at all the polling stations. Sufficient spare machines would be stocked within reach of all polling stations in case replacements were required.
