PATHANAMTHITTA: The alienation of socialists from the Left Democratic Front government is a major setback to the broader left unity which is essential for safeguarding the secular democratic credentials of the country in the present context, says Varghese George, Janata Dal (S) national general secretary.

Talking to The Hindu, Dr. George said the JD(S) had no other option but to withdraw its Minister from the coalition government when its major constituent, Communist Party of India (Marxist), failed to do justice to the party in the seat- sharing process.

Dr. George alleged that denial of the Kozhikode seat to the JD(S) was nothing short of a deceit at the eleventh hour by the CPI(M). He said the CPI(M) was well aware of the emotional attachment of the JD(S) to Kozhikode, for it being the headquarters of the socialist movement in Malabar.

He said there was every reason to suspect that the avoidable tiff over the Kozhikode seat was part of a major plot hatched by certain CPI(M) quarters to rope in certain communal forces to the hitherto secular left front.
