Alex Vadakkumthala has been ordained new bishop of Kannur at an episcopal ordination ceremony held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral here on Sunday in the presence of a large number of clergymen and the laity.
Dr. Vadakkumthala had been serving as the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Varappuzha. He is the second bishop of the diocese and hails from Pananghad, near Kochi. He had also served as the archdiocesan vice-chancellor and as a professor at the Carmelairi Pontifical Seminar at Aluva.
Religious ceremonies were held at the cathedral in the evening to mark the ordination of the new prelate of Kannur.
The elaborate consecration ceremony was witnessed by a large number of believers.
The ordination ceremony was officiated by Salvatore Pennacchio, the Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal. Francis Kalarickal, the Archbishop of Varappuzha, and Varghese Chakkalakkal, bishop of Kozhikode, were the co-consecrators of the ceremony.
The ceremony was followed by a public felicitation programme. It was inaugurated by Baselios Cardinal Claemis Catholicos, Major Archbishop of Thiruvanathapuram, and president of the Catholic Bishops Council of India and the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council.
