KOZHIKODE: The health authorities here have been put on alert to combat monsoon diseases, particularly chikungunya and infectious fever, which have been reported from some places in Kozhikode district. About 20 cases of chikungunya have been confirmed by the Health Department so far in the district. At least 90 patients with symptoms of the disease are under treatment.

As some patients have been diagnosed with chikungunya, all precautions have been taken to prevent the spread of the disease. Preventive measures are being taken as the mosquito-borne disease often leaves its victim debilitated, a condition dreaded by daily wage earners. In January alone, 18 cases of chikungunya were detected in Kozhikode district, a Health Department official said on Wednesday. By official count, only two cases of chikungunya had been confirmed in Maruthongara panchayat.
