Kerala Lalithakala Akademi will felicitate four veteran artists in the fields of sculpting, painting, photography and cartooning as part of its golden jubilee celebrations, chairman K.A. Francis and secretary Sreemoolanagaram Mohan have said.
The function has been organised as part of the valedictory of the jubilee celebrations scheduled for February 23 at the Akademi headquarters in Thrissur.
The four senior artists who have been selected for the special awards are P. Kesavankutty, sculptor and retired professor, Department of Sculpture, College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram; artist P.C. Mammen who specialises in theological paintings; N.L. Balakrishnan, veteran still photographer and film actor; and cartoonist Toms, the creator of Malayalam cartoon serial ‘Bobanum Molliyum’.
Mr. Kesavankutty is an ace sculptor whose public art presentations include the statue of Ponnara Sreedhar in Thiruvananthapuram, an installation at the KPAC campus and an installation named ‘Athani’ in his hometown of the same name in Ernakulam.
Mr. Mammen, who runs his own art school at Puthuppallay in Kottayam district, had two of his works, ‘Worship’ and ‘Agony of Christ’ exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
He has held exhibitions in Rome, Sharjah and Melbourne.
Mr. Balakrishnan moved from teaching art to photo journalism and later to still photography in movies and acting.
Cartoonist Toms, the creator of the two most loved cartoon characters in Malayalam, Boban and Molly, has also contributed to pocket cartooning in Malayalam.
