AIYF march turns violent; many activists injured in lathi-charge

Protest demonstration seeks resignation of Chief Minister

A march taken out by the All-India Youth Front to the taluk office on Tuesday demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy over the solar panel scam, turned violent.

The police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the agitating activists. Twelve activists sustained injuries in the lathi-charge and were admitted to the General Hospital. Guruvayur municipal councillor and AIYF Manalur Mandalam president A.M. Shafeer, who sustained serious head injuries, was shifted from the General Hospital to the Government Medical College Hospital, Mulankunnathukavu.

The other injured activists were AIYF district president V.J. Benny; district secretary Pradeep Kumar; C.R. Krishnakumar; V.K. Vineesh; A.S. Benoy; V.K. Aneesh; and K.M. Raghu. Photographer G.B. Kiran suffered minor injuries.

The police blocked the protesters a few yards away from the taluk office.
