Thrissur: A week-long cultural festival, being conducted here in connection with the upcoming State conference of the All-India Youth Federation (AIYF), began here on Wednesday.
Screening of films, seminars, women's meet and music programmes will mark the cultural meet.
A Thayambaka performance led by Kalamandalam Venumohan and Kalamandalam Ravishankar flagged off the festival on Wednesday evening.
Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Gopi, percussionist Peruvanam Kuttan Marar, writers Vaisakhan, K. V. Ramanathan, Parvathy Pavanan, film director Priyanandanan, and actor Jayaraj Warrier lit the traditional lamp. CPI district secretary C.N. Jayadevan presided. Chakyar Koothu by Kalamandalam Jishnu Prathap and Thullal by Kalamandalam Unnimaya were the other highlights of the evening. Priyanandanan's feature film, ‘Pulijanmam', was screened at the function.
The documentaries to be screened in the festival include ‘Ram Ke Naam' (Anand Patwardhan); ‘The Conflict' (Deboranjan Sarangi); ‘A Pyramid of Women' (Nidhi Thuli); ‘On Irom Sharmila' (Kavita Joshi); ‘Words on Water' (Sanjay Kak); ‘The Coast Under Attack' (Saraswati Kauja); ‘Daya Bai-Tribal Mercy' (Preeti Tripathi Kapur and Shashidhar Kapur); ‘Neethiyil Ninnu Kudiyozhippikkappettavar', ‘Kaypu Neeru', ‘Kanavu' and ‘1000 Dinangalum Oru Swapnavum' (C. Saratchandran).
The Thrissur Nataka Sangham will stage drama skits on Thursday. The 18th AIYF state conference will be held here from May 8 to 12.
