ALAPPUZHA: The AITUC Alappuzha district council will hold a campaign rally in the district on January 22 and 23 to demand a solution to the problems plaguing the industrial sector in the district, AITUC district secretary T.J. Anjelose said. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Anjelose, who will lead the rally, said AITUC State secretary Kanam Rajendran would inaugurate the rally. Mr. Anjelose said Alappuzha was the most backward district in the State in development matters.

He said the problems in the coir industry, including depot system, were continuing. Mr. Anjelose said Coirfed, an apex body of cooperative societies in the coir sector, was not functioning effectively. Water bodies in the district were being encroached by a section of people in the tourism industry, he said.

Mr. Anjelose said the Textiles Corporation should be told to take over Kerala Spinners Ltd. at Komalapuram, which has been remaining closed for the last four years. He said the Government should ensure job security while implementing mechanisation at workplaces. The LDF Government should take steps to reopen Scooters' Kerala Ltd, Alappuzha and the sand brick factory in the public sector at Pallippuram.
