Nedumbassery: The Airlines Casual Employees Association (ACEA) at the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has launched an indefinite relay hunger strike at the central gate of the airport here from Saturday onwards in protest against the apparent indifference by Air-India in meeting their demands of better pay and working environment.
The union leadership informed that the strike was launched after the final round of talks by the union leadership headed by Sebastian Paul, MP, with the airline officials on June 20 failed to strike an agreement on various issues raised by the union.
The ACEA, a CITU affiliated union of baggage handling workers, had been engaged in a non-cooperation movement with Air-India, the agency entrusted with the baggage handling services at the Cochin airport, by boycotting the over-time duty hours since last April. The union has been demanding a pay hike to Rs.310 from the current Rs.150 along with the benefits of double wages for over time duty hours and paid leave. However, the Air-India officials declined to comment on the issue and said that they had no idea about such a strike.
