Thrissur: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has alleged that Union Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed had stalled a much-needed inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the Marad riots. The Minister was addressing a public meeting here on Monday as part of the celebrations of the fourth anniversary of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.

“Following recommendations of the Justice Joseph Commission, the LDF government had demanded four times a CBI inquiry into the Marad riots. For fear that the role of the National Development Front (NDF) will be revealed, the Centre ignored the demand. The investigation was averted mainly because Mr. Ahamed was a part of the Union government,” Mr. Balakrishnan alleged.

He said the Marad riots were a result of Islamic fundamentalism tightening its grip over the State's administration. “During the LDF tenure, fundamentalists could not do this,” he said.

He said that the alleged role of a section of the Catholic Church in the merger of the Kerala Congress groups led by K.M. Mani and P.J. Joseph, respectively, indicated that religious forces were increasingly getting involved in politics. “I do not believe that Church leaders such as Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhathu have been involved in such politicking,” he said.

He dismissed Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy's statement that the Centre's initiatives had prevented suicides by farmers. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, P. R. Rajan, MP, CPI Assistant Secretary K.E. Ismail, CPI(M) district secretary Baby John and CPI district secretary C.N. Jayadevan were present.
