Thrissur: Haritha Keralam project, the State government’s afforestation drive, was inaugurated in the district on World Environment Day on Friday. About three lakh saplings would be planted in the district under the project in association with local bodies.

Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran inaugurated World Environment Day celebrations at Kerala Sahitya Akademi by planting a Neermathalam (Crataeva Nurvula) sapling. About 50 saplings were planted on the akademi campus.

District Tourism Promotion Council planted saplings of various trees on Poomala Dam premises on World Environment Day as part of the on-going beautification works.

Writer K.G. Sankarapillai inaugurated the celebration of the day at Thrissur Government Medical College. He planted a sapling of

Neermathalam in memory of writer Kamala Suraiya at the Healing Garden on the campus.

Various programmes were organised by District Literacy Mission, Salsabeel Senior Secondary School, Mundur, and Evangelical Social Action Forum to mark the day.
