A group of women activists conducted a protest near the Thantedam Gender Fest venue at Swapnanagari on Thursday, questioning the objectives of the festival and its organiser, the Department of Social Welfare.

In a press release, the activists led by K. Ajitha, Sreeja P., Sheeba Baby, Vasantha P., Lisy Johnson, and Jansy Jose said the Thantedam gender park planned at Vellimadukunnu would be just another government institution though the authorities claimed that it would be an independent institution managed by women.

But the words “independent” and “women's leadership” were missing in the concept note for the Gender Fest, thus taking away the very essence of the project.

The programme would be a farce organised in the name of women, and would not be different from the ‘Malabar Mahotsavam,' the activists said, and pointed out that they had to question the political and male chauvinistic hijack of the festival.
