A tanker lorry carrying sulphuric acid hit a shop and overturned near Parakode on the Adoor-Punalur road early on Monday.

The police said the incident occurred at 12.15 a.m. The pungent smell and fumes generated due to the acid flowing on the road caused panic. The police took steps to evacuate people from the vicinity of the vehicle.

It took nearly five hours for 25 teams of the Fire and Rescue Services to reach the spot from Adoor, Kottayam, Thiruvalla, Changanacherry, Pathanamthitta, Kottarakkara, and Punalur to deactivate the concentrated acid. Additional District Magistrate H.Salimraj directed the District Medical Officer, State Pollution Control Board, and the Agriculture Department to submit a report on the impact of the leak.
