ALAPPUZHA: In an unusual turn of events, District and Sessions Court Judge D. Sreevallabhan on Wednesday directed the first and second accused in the Kanichukulangara triple murder case to pay expenses to eight witnesses who appeared in the court on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The directive came after counsel for the first and second accused could not appear for the cross-examination of the witnesses for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. The two accused, Unni and Ajithkumar, will have to pay Rs.1,000 each to four witnesses — Kuttikrishnan, Mani, Mumtaz and Murali — who had made themselves available for the cross-examination on two days, while four others including Johnson, Mackar and Abdul Kabeer who came on Wednesday would receive Rs.500 each.

Counsel for Unni and Ajithkumar could not appear for the proceedings on both days since he had to appear for another case in a CBI Court in Kochi, it is learnt.

The cross-examination of the witnesses in the case, an alleged fake accident that killed three persons on July 20, 2005, will continue on in the District and Sessions Court Thursday.
