The importance given to lyrics of songs in Malayalam cinema is on the decline, said Thunchathu Ezhuthachan Malayalam University Vice-Chancellor K. Jayakumar on Wednesday.

He was speaking at a meeting to commemorate the 158th birth anniversary of legendary Malayalam-Sanskrit writer Kottarathil Sankunni and the birth centenary of pioneering lyricist Abhayadev.

Malayalam cinema had reached a point where its songs were no longer memorable, he said. “Only very few songs released recently remain in one’s memory for a long. The worrying trend can be regarded as a debacle for Malayalam lyricists,” he said.

He said Abhayadev’s achievements were remarkable as he captured the essence of the State’ tradition in his works. His contributions had ushered a change in Malayalam film music, Mr. Jayakumar said. — Staff Reporter
