It is a rich harvest of bananas (‘Nendran) for the women's self-help group that cultivated nearly three acres of Horticorp land in Kakkanad.

Banana cultivation was taken up under the initiative of the women's self-help group in Vannappuram and Horticorp, which is engaged in procurement and sale of vegetables, with emphasis on vegetables grown within the State. However, the price of bananas crashed after Onam resulting in Rs. one lakh loss for them. Naseema Ibrahim, who is part of the self-help group of women that cultivated the land, said that the crop was encouraging given that this was the first time that this particular swathe of land was being brought under cultivation of any crop.

The harvest is good and about 80 per cent of the nearly 2,200 banana plants are expected to yield a little less than 20 tonnes of bananas. The nine-member women's group has done their job well and they are not discouraged by the losses. In fact, the plot is being readied for the second round of cultivation of bananas from November.
