Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the Kavalam Puthenchundan Samithi, an initiative formed to build a new ‘chundan’ (snake-boat) in the place of the legendary ‘Kavalam chundan’, at a function at Kavalam KSRTC Junction on January 15.

The Minister will also inaugurate membership of the new Samithi on the occasion, Samithi president Jomon Joseph and secretary, Francis Joseph told reporters here on Saturday. Thomas Chandy, MLA, will preside. Film actor Saranya Mohan will light the traditional lamp. Playwright, Kavalam Narayana Panickker will also address the meeting.

The logo for the Samithi will be released by 2012 Nehru Trophy winning captain of Freedom Boat Club, Jiji Jacob Pollayil. The logo was selected through a contest on Facebook. C.V.Gopakumar of Karichal has designed the logo.

A vanchipattu contest will be held in the morning and a procession to herald the meeting will be held in the afternoon.

The office-bearers of the Samithi said that Koyilmukku Umamaheswaran Achary will build the new ‘chundan’ at an estimated cost of Rs. 45 lakh. The ‘chundan’ will be built using the money received as shares from Kavalam village and from fans of the boat race.
