Of first water: The Pothundi dam near Nenmara in Palakkad district. One of the major dams in the State, the structure was constructed in the 19th century with an aim of providing water for irrigation in Palakkad. Its design was much ahead of its contemporaries as an unusual blend of quick lime and jaggery was used to build up its core. The traditional concrete core was used in the construction of most dams to resist the huge water pressure. — Photo: K.K. Mustafah.
