The face is the reflection of the mind; or it can become a mirror to the ravaged earth. A schoolgirl turned her visage to highlight the planet’s predicament, one hemisphere painted as parched, barren land and the other, green and vibrant.

She was part of a unique protest by students of Amrutha Vidyalaya here, in the company of environmental activists, to save the Kakkad river.

Nearly 300 people belonging to the Kakkad river protection collective got together on the banks of the river and went on a day-long fast. The students and the activists took an oath to save Nature and revive the river.

With plastic and other waste thrown into its waters, much of the river is facing peril. The proliferation of buildings along the banks and the functioning a fish market have caused extensive damage, damaging half of a once-thriving river. Garbage and effluents have destroyed it, and the effort is to breathe life into the dying river, members of the collective said. Part of the garbage was removed and the riverbed cleaned up.
