Of the total electorate of 5,38,908 in Wayanad district 79.78 per cent cast their votes in the local body polls on Saturday.

District Collector and District Election Officer T. Bhaskaran told The Hindu on Sunday that it was an increase of 11.78 per cent over the figures in the previous local body polls in 2005.

Close to 81.22 percent polling was recorded in the rural areas, including the four block panchayats. Kalpetta municipality recorded 78.36 per cent, Mr. Bhaskaran said. 

The total votes polled in the Sulthan Bathery block panchayat (five grama panchayats) was 83.14 per cent; Kalpetta block panchayat (9 grama panchayats) 81.18 percent; Mananthavadi block panchayat (6 panchayats) 83.15 percent; and Panamaram block panchayat (five grama panchayat) 79.27 percent. The highest polling was recorded in Kottathara grama panchayat (85.17 percent) and the lowest in Mepadi grama panchayat (74.01).
